Maryam Turkey


Maryam Turkey (born 1994) is an Iraqi-American artist and designer based in Brooklyn, New York. In 2009, she moved with her family to the United States as refugees, attending the Baltimore School for the Arts where she studied traditional painting. She continued her education in art and design at Pratt Institute, earning a Bachelor of Industrial Design in 2017. Shortly after graduation, Turkey was awarded an art residency at the Museum of Art and Design. This was followed by several esteemed residencies, including the Silver Arts Residency at the World Trade Center (LMCC) and Worthless Studios. Turkey has been featured in Architectural Digest as "one to watch" in 2021, Surface Magazine, Galerie Magazine, Interior Magazine, Dezeen, and The Wall Street Journal. In 2023, she was awarded the For Freedoms annual fellowship, which supports artists focusing on social change. She unveiled her public sculpture at the Socrates Sculpture Park as part of her Socrates Annual Fellowship that same year. Most recently, Turkey won the 2024 Vilcek Prize for Creative Promise in Design, which recognizes immigrants who have achieved early career excellence in the United States.
